Hot Stuff: URGENT
Sir Martin Aguda Jr. is head of the Safety and Events Risk Management and chief of the ABSCBN fire brigade. Last Thursday, he gave an exhilarating lecture that literally took our breath away. Infusing laughter into his “fire tips” made each extremely memorable. Here are the bits and pieces:
Ø The small fire truck is called a “penetrator.” ANOS is a manufacturer hence, the text in front of the vehicle read “ANOS PENETRATOR.”
Ø When crawling out of a building, it is advised to stay beside a wall because it will always lead to an exit. Sir Martin however warned “Matakot ka kung walang pinto.”
Ø It’s better to be safe than sorry. “Binabayaran ako ng kumpanya para maging praning.” While he was lecturing on the leading causes of fire, we all thought: “Teka sir, uwi muna ‘ko!”
Ø Fire prevention and emergency planning starts at home. Have a predetermined area where family members shall meet in case of emergency evacuation. Aside from the nearest street, agree also on an area outside Metro Manila in case of a coup.
Ø Fire drill at home?! Mukhang tanga! Yeah, it seems funny at first, but it can save lives by helping us to get familiarized with our immediate surroundings not just through our eyes, but through our sense of touch.
Ø Fire exit signs? Dapat may pupuntahan, hindi lang display.
Ø Smoke detectors are most helpful when everybody’s sleeping. Just don’t place it in the kitchen. Maya’t maya aalarma ‘yan!
Ø Previously, I blogged on how to use the fire extinguisher. So now that you know it, memorize where each is placed in your school or office.
Ø Sir Martin asked one of our classmates to get one fire extinguisher for a demo.
Ø The extinguisher weighs at least 10 lbs. Find your match. A, B,C, or D fires.
Ø You can find pseudo-extinguishers in school (figurines!). It’s better to have none than to have a false sense of safety.
‘Wag kikay. At lalong ‘wag nang magkumpuni.
Ø Target the base of the fire and work in a sweeping motion.
An extinguisher lasts for about thirty seconds.
Ø In getting out of a building, the technique is “Stop, drop, and roll.” Just don’t roll into the fire. Ha ha ha...
Hanga na talaga ko sa mga bumbero. Kailangan mabilis ang bawat pagpapasya. Kaya sana mag-aral sila nang mabuti. My question however is, nagkasunog na kaya sa Fire Academy?
