Mall Rats, Beware!
The recent shooting incidents in SM North EDSA and SM Pampanga once again brought the authorities back to their toes. Now they’re rethinking the following:
1. The routinary inspection rendered ineffective by security guards who do it for eight hours (They’re suggesting the rotation of location assignments now.)
2. Walk-through machines that are just meant for display
3. The increasing number of loose firearms
4. The readiness of private security agencies in responding to crisis situations
5. The provision of gun vaults (as opposed to just keeping surrendered firearms underneath the unlocked wooden pigeon hole at the inspection area)
6. The proper use of metal detectors
7. Training on profiling (observing facial expression and body language while frisking)
So we can expect inspections to take a little longer in the coming days or weeks. I myself am a frequent mall-goer until recently. The unfortunate incidents remind us that we should always be alert with our surroundings no matter how engrossed we are with shopping.
